GardenRight.Info

Welcome to GardenRight.info.  This is a web site that celebrates the wonders of growing and enjoying plants.   I'm Bob Stewart, retired after 35 years as a professional horticulturist, including 29 years with the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Service.  The web site arose during an eight year weekly garden radio program in Washington, D.C.  The radio show is over, retirement is underway, and now I would just like to share my gardening experiences with you.   I garden on three acres in the southern part of Maryland, volunteer as a trainer for the Maryland Master Gardener program, and as newsletter editor for the National Capital Cactus and Succulent Society.

Hardy Cactus in Maryland

 Summer 2008

The web site is composed of several sections.  The Cactus Hill Diary chronicals activities in the yard and garden here in Southern Maryland. It's updated every week or two.

One of my primary areas of interest when working as a Horticultural Educator with the  Maryland Cooperative Extension was plant diagnostics.  I continue to work as a volunteer with several Maryland County Master Gardener programs and continue to assist area homeonwers on their yard, garden and bug problems. The Plant Clinic Page discusses some of the plant and bug problems I've dealt with recently.

A longtime hobby has been growing cacti and other types of succulent plants.  The Cactus Page is devoted to these interesting and fascinating plants.

The photo above shows several hardy cacti flowering in the Cactus Hill hardy cactus garden here in Southern Maryland.  The red flowered, tall plants are chollas, the scientific name is Cylindropuntia imbricata.  These plants were planted in the mid 1990's, began flowering in the late 1990's, and have flowered every year since.  They're one of my favorite hardy cacti.
